Position Title: Environment and Sustainability Manager
Reports To: Chief HSSEQ Officer

 

Job Objectives

Accountable for designing, developing, implementing and monitoring environmental strategies, policies and programs that promote compliance with environmental legislation and regulatory requirements in Qatar. Responsible for overseeing the environmental performance of the organization.

Key Accountabilities - 1

Policies, Systems, Processes & Procedures

Develop and gain approval for department policies and procedures ensuring their alignment to overall business objectives. Monitor and control implementation and advice on the policy application to ensure that they are properly communicated and widely understood.

 

Departmental Reports

Ensure the departmental reports are prepared as per management request, in a timely and accurate manner to meet company and department requirements governing reporting.

 

Health, Safety and Environment

  • Comply with all agreed occupational health, safety and environmental regulations in order to protect personnel and physical assets. Ensure that the work areas are kept in a clean and tidy state in order that work can be carried out safely and effectively.
  • Adherence to world class best practices for safety, health and environmental standards.

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Provide input and recommend the continuous improvement of the company practices taking into account ‘international best practice’, changes in international standards and changes in the business environment which demand proactive action plans.
  • Contribute to the identification of opportunities for continuous improvement of department system, processes and practices, cost reduction and productivity improvement.

 

People Management

  • Ensure the effective achievement of functional objectives through the leadership of Environment and Sustainability by setting departmental and individual objectives, managing performance, developing and motivating staff, provision of formal and informal feedback and appraisal in order to optimize individual and departmental performance.
  • Actively develop and maintain Succession Plans for the department. Also play an active role as a mentor.

 

Qatarization

Ensure the development of nationals and to take on adequate positions should be given special attention.

 

Quality Management

  • Responsible for the development and implementation of quality management systems and procedures.
  • To filter key points from complex details and develop plans accordingly.

 

Budget

Cost responsibility for Environment and Sustainability and to operate effectively within their budget.

Key Accountabilities - 2

Department Activities

  • Leading the implementation of environmental policies and practice and liaising with relevant bodies such as local authorities, public bodies and competent bodies.
  • Setting organizational sustainability targets, and developing plans to meet those targets and oversee subordinates delivery. Adherence to world class best practise for Environmental standards.
  • Develop approaches to assessing and mitigating Environmental risks across disciplines in Qatalum.
  • Work with Qatalum management to build cross-functional working relationships and develop programs and systems to ensure high level of Environment performance in Qatalum.
  • Foresee the potential impact of changes in legislation and provide direction and guidance during the decision making process to identify potential solutions internally or through negotiations with authorities.
  • Promote collaboration with all Qatalum depts. for any Environmental issues.
  • Establish Environmental measures for Environmental team to assess the whole plant with respect of Environment
  • Participating in environmental education and research and develop viable and sustainable solutions to handle all by-products generated.
  • Liaison with local universities and other research bodies for sustainable solutions for environmental issues.
  • Represent Qatalum in re-search forums on Environmental and subjects.
  • Focal point of contact between Universities and Qatalum for any technical nor environmental research projects carried out by faculty or students of the Universities.
  • Define environment issues and objectives through discussions with government authorities, stakeholders and senior management, linking them to business objectives.
  • Carrying out impact assessments to identify, assess and reduce an organization’s environmental risks and financial costs.
  • Promoting and raising awareness, at all levels of an organization, of the impact of emerging environmental issues, whether legislative or best practice, on corporate, ethical and social responsibility.
  • Provide innovative strategies in the area of prevention and environment management.
  • Coordinating all aspects of waste management, recycling.
  • Lead plant environment audits and develop other resources to perform these audits.
  • Facilitate the Ministry Audits and develop actions plans.

Minimum Qualifications Required

University Degree in Environment Sciences/Engineering, bio-med or similar discipline.

Minimum Experience Required

  • 7- 9 years’ experience in a similar position in an Aluminium Smelter.
  • 3 years Management/ Supervisory experience required.
